India saw Vinesh Phogat’s chances of a gold medal in the women’s 50kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics severely damaged. The officials declared the 29-year-old wrestler ineligible for the competition on the second day because he weighed in 150 grams too heavy on the final day.
Unfortunately, Vinesh Phogat will not win any medal at the Paris Olympics if disqualification is approved. Despite the best efforts of Vinesh Phogat’s team on Tuesday evening, the wrestler lost on Wednesday.
It turns out that there is no way to reverse this decision and Vinesh Phogat will go home without an award. According to the World Wrestling Federation, any wrestler who loses his weight class is ranked last.
“If the athlete does not participate or fails to secure first or second place, the competition will remove him, making him a finalist without a ranking,” he said, according to the rules of world wrestling.
Vinesh Phogat was within the limit of 50 kg on Tuesday. She upset world No. 1 Yui Susaki in the first round before advancing to the quarterfinals and semi-finals to become the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final.
AN INDIAN OLYMPIAN REACTS
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), in an official statement, confirmed the qualification. He also asked all concerned to ensure the privacy of Vinesh Phogat.
