Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi of the People’s Republic of China in the final on Sunday to win the Thailand Open 2024 badminton men’s doubles championship.
The world No. 3 Indian badminton team defeated their 29th-ranked opponents by a score of 21-15, 21-15 in 46 minutes while playing at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.
For Chirag and Satwik, this was their second Thailand Open championship and their second of the 2024 badminton season. Prior to won the French Open in March of this year, Chirag and Satwik were finalists in the Malaysia Open and India Open this year.
At the Thailand Open in 2019, the Indian duo won their first Super 500 championship on the BWF World Tour. The Indian team competed in a BWF Super 500 summit match for the fifth time, winning each time, in the Thailand Open final of 2024.
After winning the title, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy remarked, “Thailand Open has been a special tournament for us as we won our first Super 500 crown here and have won many more tournaments thereafter.” “We’re hoping that this victory will set us up for future success.”
The Indian badminton players are predicted to take back the top spot in the world rankings the following week with 9200 ranking points from the competition.
On the BWF World Tour, this was Satwik and Chirag’s seventh victory overall. Last year, the Indian duo won the Korea Open, the Indonesia Open, and the Swiss Open.
The Asian Games champions defeated China’s Xie Hao Nan and Zeng Wei Han in the second round of the Thailand Open 2024, and Malaysia’s Tan Wee Kiong and Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub in their opening match.
In the quarterfinals, Chirag and Satwik defeated Malaysia’s Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King, and in the semifinals, they triumphed against Ming Che Lu and Tang Kai Wei of Chinese Taipei. The Indian duo won all of their games in a row.
For elite Indian badminton players, the Malaysia Masters BWF Super 500 will be their next challenge.
