India Secures First Win in 16 Months; Chhetri Shines on Comeback
Shillong, India – On March 19, 2025, Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri made a poignant return to international play, scoring his 95th career goal in a 3-0 victory against the Maldives at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Chhetri’s Remarkable Comeback
After announcing his retirement in June 2024 following a World Cup qualifier against Kuwait, Chhetri reversed his decision on March 8, 2025, aiming to bolster India’s campaign for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
In the 76th minute of the match, Chhetri showcased his enduring skill. Liston Colaco delivered a precise cross to the near post, where Chhetri deftly maneuvered past defenders to head the ball into the net. This goal solidified his position as the fourth-highest men’s international goalscorer.
Visibly moved, Chhetri refrained from celebrating, instead looking skyward and closing his eyes, reflecting the emotional weight of his return. He was subsequently substituted, receiving heartfelt congratulations from teammates.
Team Performance and Strategic Victory
This match marked India’s first win under head coach Manolo Marquez and their first victory in 16 months. The team last triumphed against Kuwait in November 2023.
Defender Rahul Bheke initiated the scoring in the 34th minute with a powerful header from a Brandon Fernandes cross. In the 66th minute, Colaco extended the lead by converting a corner from Mahesh Singh, celebrating with enthusiasm. Chhetri’s goal in the 76th minute sealed the 3-0 win.
Looking Ahead: AFC Asian Cup Qualifier
The victory serves as a morale booster ahead of India’s crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh, scheduled at the same venue in less than a week. Coach Marquez’s strategies and Chhetri’s return are expected to play pivotal roles in the upcoming match.
