India’s rising star, Shubman Gill, has once again etched his name in the record books with a remarkable milestone. Since making his debut in 2019, Gill has delivered several match-winning performances, and during the ongoing third ODI against England, he shattered yet another record, surpassing a former South African legend.
Shubman Gill’s Historic Feat
Initially batting at No. 3 in the series opener, Gill eventually took up his preferred opening role and showcased stellar form. He registered three consecutive half-centuries in the ongoing ODI series against England, led by Jos Buttler. With scores of 87, 60, and an unbeaten 78* (currently batting), he became only the seventh Indian to achieve this feat in a three-match ODI bilateral series.
Adding to his list of achievements, Gill reached 2,500 runs in ODI cricket in just 50 innings, making him the fastest Indian to achieve this milestone. The previous record was held by Shreyas Iyer, who took 59 innings to reach the same mark, meaning Gill accomplished the feat nine innings quicker.
Fastest Indians to 2,500 ODI Runs
Shubman Gill – 50 innings
Shreyas Iyer – 59 innings
Shikhar Dhawan – 60 innings
KL Rahul – 63 innings
Virat Kohli / Navjot Sidhu – 64 innings
Shubman Gill Breaks Global Record
Gill’s achievement is not just an Indian record but also a global one. He surpassed South African great Hashim Amla, who previously held the record for the fastest 2,500 ODI runs, reaching the landmark in 53 innings.
Amla, who made his ODI debut in 2008, accumulated 8,113 runs in his career at an average of 49.46. In contrast, Gill, having played 50 ODIs so far, has already amassed over 2,500 runs at an astonishing average above 60. His strike rate of 101.84, with 16 half-centuries and six centuries, further highlights his consistency and dominance.
A Big Boost for India Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025
Gill’s red-hot form comes as a major advantage for India as they prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025. With his ability to anchor and accelerate innings, he will be a key asset as India aims for global supremacy.
India’s Progress in the Third ODI Against England
In the ongoing match, India is batting first and has posted 147/2 after 23 overs at the time of writing. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are currently at the crease, while Virat Kohli contributed a solid 52 before getting dismissed. India will look to capitalize on this strong platform to put up a challenging total.
