Pat Cummins has been sidelined since January 2025, following Australia’s five-match Test series against India. Despite struggling with an ankle injury, he played through the pain in a bid to help Australia reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, his injury forced him to miss the subsequent Sri Lanka tour and the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
With his recovery on track, Pat Cummins is confident about returning in time for the IPL.
“The ankle is all going strong. I’ve been able to give it a good rest and then slowly build back up, which isn’t always possible when you’re playing continuously. It feels as strong as it has in a long time. The plan is to be ready for the IPL. I’ll have a few weeks of bowling, build back up, and hopefully stay fit for a while,” Cummins told ESPNCricinfo.
Managing Workload Ahead of a Packed Calendar
Cummins is carefully managing his workload, ensuring he is fit for four back-to-back Test matches. Including the WTC Final and a three-match Test series against West Indies. While he may miss some white-ball games. His long-term focus is also on the Ashes, scheduled later this year in Australia.
The Aussie skipper emphasized the importance of workload management in modern cricket.
“Sometimes, by skipping certain tours, you actually end up playing more cricket throughout the year. In the past, players tried to play everything, but now the focus is on staying at peak performance for as long as possible. Everyone understands this is the way things work now,” Cummins added.
With his fitness improving, Cummins is set to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025. Aiming to make a significant impact both in franchise cricket and for Australia’s key international assignments.
