Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami opened up about his journey back to cricket, sharing how his hunger and passion to represent the country have fueled his recovery from multiple injuries. Shami, who last played for India in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, is set to return to international cricket during the upcoming T20I series against England after 15 months on the sidelines.
Mohammed Shami’s Injury Setbacks and Recovery
Shami, 34, sustained an Achilles injury during his remarkable performance in the 2023 World Cup. The injury required surgery in February 2024, forcing him to miss India’s T20 World Cup triumph. While he was initially expected to return during the Test season, complications with his knee further delayed his comeback.
To regain fitness, Shami participated in domestic tournaments, including the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. His hard work paid off, earning him a spot in India’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The Hunger Driving Mohammed Shami
Speaking at an event organized by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Shami reflected on his determination to overcome setbacks.
“The hunger to play for the country should never end,” Shami said. “If you love the game, you will always fight back, no matter how many times you get injured. That hunger keeps you going.”
He added, “No matter how many matches I play, it always feels like less. Because once I leave cricket, I may never get this chance again.”
Mohammed Shami’s Legacy and Comeback
With 229 Test wickets and 195 ODI scalps, Mohammed Shami is already among India’s greatest fast bowlers. His return against England marks his first appearance for India in T20Is since his injury, and he remains determined to contribute as much as possible before retiring.
Shami’s journey serves as a testament to resilience and passion, inspiring fans and players alike as he dons the Indian jersey once again.
