The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a significant increase in the prize fund for the upcoming Women’s T20 WC. With the total prize pool now standing at USD 7.95 million, marking a 225% rise from the previous edition. The winning team will take home USD 2.34 million, up 134% from the USD 1 million awarded to the Australian team after their victory in South Africa in 2023.
In a groundbreaking move, the ICC also confirmed that starting from the 2024 Women’s T20 WC. Prize money for men’s and women’s World Cup events will be equal. This marks the first time in cricket history that women will receive the same financial rewards as their male counterparts. This development allows the ICC to meet its goal of prize money equity seven years ahead of its original target of 2030.
The runners-up in the women’s tournament will be awarded USD 1.17 million. Which represents a 134% increase from the USD 500,000 South Africa received as runners-up in 2023. Teams that reach the semi-finals will earn USD 675,000 each, a substantial increase from the USD 210,000 given to semi-finalists last year.
Women’s T20 WC: USD 31K Per Win, Equal Rewards by 2032
In addition, teams will receive USD 31,154 for each group stage win. And the six teams that fail to reach the semi-finals will share a prize pool of USD 1.35 million. Distributed according to their standings. Teams finishing third and fourth in their groups will each receive USD 270,000. While those finishing fifth will take home USD 135,000.
The ICC stated that this move is part of its broader strategy to accelerate the growth of women’s cricket by 2032. Ensuring equal prize money at comparable events and for winning individual matches.
The ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup will take place in the UAE from October 3 to 20, 2024. With matches hosted at venues in Dubai and Sharjah. Group stage matches will conclude by October 15. Followed by the semi-finals on October 17 and 18, and the final on October 20.
