Mumbai Indians (MI) have confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team in their first game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This is because regular skipper Hardik Pandya is serving a one-match suspension for repeated over-rate offenses in the last season.
Hardik Pandya’s Suspension Details
During the final match of IPL 2024 against the Lucknow Super Giants, MI could not keep up the necessary over-rate, which was their third offense of the season. As a result, Hardik Pandya was handed a 30% fine on his match fee along with a one-match ban, which he will undergo during the next opener against CSK. Speaking about the suspension, Pandya said the delay was inadvertent and recognized the need to follow the rules.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Captaincy Role
Captain of India’s T20 side currently, Suryakumar Yadav is to lead MI in Pandya’s absence. Pandya declared his confidence in Yadav and said he suited the captaincy role very well, having prior experience.
MI’s head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that pacer Jasprit Bumrah is recuperating from a back injury he suffered earlier this year and is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Bumrah’s return date is yet to be decided, but he is likely to rejoin the team in early April to resume his rehab.
