Jay Shah, a prominent figure in Indian cricket administration, officially began his tenure as Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday, December 1. Elected unopposed earlier this year, the 36-year-old steps into the role at a pivotal time for global cricket.
Gratitude and Vision for Global Cricket
In his inaugural statement, Shah expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him by the ICC Directors and Member Boards.
“I am honoured to be starting in the role of ICC Chair and want to thank the ICC Directors and Member Boards for their support and trust in me to undertake this important role,” he said.
Shah highlighted the sport’s potential for growth and inclusivity as cricket prepares to make its Olympic return at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. He emphasized the need to navigate the coexistence of multiple formats and accelerate the growth of women’s cricket.
“This is an exciting time for the sport as we build up to the LA28 Olympic Games and strive to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before. We also stand at a critical juncture in terms of the coexistence of multiple formats and accelerating the growth of the women’s game. There is huge potential for the game of cricket globally, with so much opportunity to engage with existing and new fans, while ensuring the best resources and platforms for our cricketers around the world,” Shah added.
Rich Experience in Cricket Administration
Shah’s journey in cricket administration began with his work at the district and state levels in the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA). He has served as Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since 2019. His notable contributions include his roles as President of the Asian Cricket Council and Chair of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee.
These positions have provided Shah with valuable insight and experience, equipping him to address the challenges and opportunities of leading cricket’s global governing body.
Acknowledgment of Predecessor and Future Goals
Shah expressed gratitude to outgoing ICC Chairman Greg Barclay for his leadership over the past four years.
“I would also like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership in the role for the past four years and the milestones achieved during that period,” he said.
Looking ahead, Shah aims to work closely with ICC staff and member nations to expand the sport’s reach and ensure its sustainable development.
“I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and the Member countries to sustainably expand the game’s reach and evolution on the global stage,” he added.
Shaping the Future of Cricket
With Shah at the helm, the ICC embarks on a critical phase, focusing on strengthening the sport’s global appeal. From preparing for cricket’s Olympic return to fostering inclusivity and growing the women’s game, his leadership comes at a time of transformation and opportunity for world cricket.
