New Zealand’s legendary pacer Tim Southee has announced his retirement from Test cricket. His final series in the longest format will be the upcoming home series against England, unless New Zealand qualifies for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final in June 2024.
Final Test Series at Home
Southee’s farewell to Test cricket will be marked at his home ground, Seddon Park in Hamilton, during the third Test of the series, scheduled from December 14-18. At 36, the Kiwi fast-bowler will end his illustrious Test career as New Zealand’s second-highest wicket-taker with 385 scalps in 104 matches, only behind the legendary Sir Richard Hadlee (431).
Record-Breaking Career
Over his 18-year international career, Southee achieved remarkable milestones:
New Zealand’s highest all-format wicket-taker with 770 dismissals.
The only fast bowler to play 100 matches in each of the three international formats.
The sole bowler to claim 300 Test, 200 ODI, and 100 T20I wickets.
Reflection on His Journey
In an emotional statement, Southee expressed gratitude for his time in the sport:
“Representing New Zealand was all I ever dreamed of growing up. To play for the BLACKCAPS for 18 years has been the greatest honour and privilege, but the time feels right to now step away from the game that has given so much to me.”
Southee emphasized the significance of Test cricket in his career, adding,
“To play such a big series against the same opponent my Test career began against all those years ago, and on three grounds that are incredibly special to me, seems the perfect way to end my time in the black cap.”
Decision Pending on White-Ball Future
Southee has yet to decide on his white-ball career. He plans to announce his decision before New Zealand hosts Sri Lanka at the end of December.
Leadership and Legacy
Southee relinquished his Test captaincy in October 2024. Paving the way for Tom Latham, who led New Zealand to a 3-0 ODI series victory over India. Known for his adaptability and leadership, Southee represented New Zealand in:
Four ODI World Cups.
Seven T20I World Cups.
Two Champions Trophy tournaments.
His pivotal role in New Zealand’s WTC Final victory in 2021 against India, where he took five wickets, solidified his legacy as one of the greatest Blackcaps.
As Southee prepares for his swansong, New Zealand cricket fans and players alike will celebrate his immense contributions to the game.
